Slugging

Skin slugging, aka skin flooding or moisture sandwiching, is a technique in which a heavy, occlusive product such as a thick moisturizer or facial oil is applied to the skin to lock in moisture and create a barrier that helps to prevent water loss.

The social media version of Slugging involves applying Vaseline over serums and creams to lock in hydration. While we favor using occlusives to protect the skin, professionals rarely recommend such heavy occlusives for regular use as Vaseline or Aquaphor unless after some medical procedures where the skin barrier is no longer intact.

For dry skin, skin slugging can be a helpful technique as it lacks natural oils and can benefit from the added hydration and moisture retention provided by the occlusive product. Appropriate products for dry skin slugging contain hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin. Apply a serum, moisturizer, or oil and follow up with a heavier layer to create an occlusive barrier to hold everything in, much like plastic wrap protects food.

Skin Slugging can be used on oily skin, but there may be better approaches, as it can exacerbate the problem by clogging pores and causing breakouts. Oily skin types already produce enough natural oils, so adding more occlusive products can cause more harm than good. Instead, people with oily skin should use lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizers and focus on maintaining a consistent skincare routine that includes cleansing and exfoliating.

To get the most benefit from layering skincare products, start with thin watery hydrators such as glycerin, then add layers containing hyaluronic acid (bind moisture), ceramides (lock in moisture), or niacinamide (slows evaporation). As with any skincare technique, listening to your skin and adjusting your routine as needed is essential.

My favorite product for this technique is Daily Ceramide Capsules from GM Collin, as it is safe and effective for all skin types, including sensitive ones. A bonus is that ceramides are naturally found in the skin and depleted as we age, so the product won't feel heavy or sticky like other options.

If skin slugging is not working for you, try a different approach. There are other ways to lock in moisture to your skin; try using a humidifier in your home or incorporating a hydrating serum into your routine. Need help to figure out what's best for your skin? We are here to help.
