Daily Skin Changes

YOUR SKIN'S DAILY ROLLERCOASTER

Just like your weight can go up or down throughout the day, your skin fluctuates too. It may seem somewhat annoying to be dry in the morning and oily in the afternoon, but your skin does this as a natural way to adapt to serve different functions as your body needs it.

We all have come to understand that the skin’s needs change with the seasons. Adapting routines to avoid itchy skin in winter and combat that summer shine isn’t all that earth-shattering, but your skin changes just as much every single day!

Our body’s sleep-wake cycle, or circadian rhythm, is the force that causes all of these changes in the daily life of your skin.

DAYTIME:

Skin is the largest and most protective organ the body has. From the first light of dawn, your skin is busy protecting you from pollution, dehydration, temperature shifts, and of course, harmful UV rays. In order to facilitate all of its protective functions, the skin starts to thicken in the morning, leading many to say their skin looks better when they first get ready for the day. We can help our skin fight a good fight by ensuring we provide it with free-radical fighting antioxidants, like vitamin C and a high-quality mineral SPF.

Are your getting oily throughout the day? That might be due to external and internal stressors on the skin, which trigger the production of more oil (sebum), which is at its peak in the afternoon. So if you feel like you have to blot your nose all afternoon, you are in good company.

As the afternoon turns into evening, we see an increase in the natural water evaporation on the skin’s surface than we do earlier in the day. This water loss is easily exacerbated by environmental factors like wind, climate, HVAC, and sun exposure, leading to skin that appears dry and rough. You can help combat dehydrated skin by keeping a hydrating mist nearby to give skin a boost.

AT NIGHT:

Your body powers down at night so does your skin; well, not really. The skin clock is still keeping time at night when it w\switches from protect to repair mode. At night, your skin works to heal by nourishing itself with fresh vitamin-rich blood and new skin cells while you sleep.

The daily repairs require extra ingredients like peptides, antioxidants, and collagen and elastin supporters to do their job correctly. Even melatonin, an often used natural sleep aid, can help prepare the skin for repair (when used topically). It triggers the repair of the oxidative stress of the past days UV and pollution.

Skin also may require an extra boost of moisture at night as it produces far less oil while you sleep. Oil not only keeps our skin supple but also is the key to locking in hydration.

RESET YOUR SKIN"S PATH EVERY DAY

Proper skincare is a lifestyle choice and the simplest way to ensure that your largest immune system organ works its best. Care for it properly both morning and night to make the most of its long list of protective services, and your skin will reward you with a glowing complexion that will last well into your later years.
