What is a Skin Purge?

What does "Purging" Mean?

You may have heard your esthetician tell you, "your skin may purge," after a facial or a change in-home care routine, but what does this mean? And, how can you tell?

Certain types of blemishes lurk under the skin, sometimes for months, before they come to the surface into what we commonly know as a pimple. When professional treatments or products increase cell turnover rate, the blemish-causing debris comes to the surface faster and often all at once. This sudden 'skin purge' is usually short-lived and can be pretty dramatic but shouldn't be confused with a typical breakout. These sudden breakouts are a good thing because it means you are in for clearer skin soon!

But what if it's not just a purge? How can you tell?

Purging happens within a few days of a treatment or change in routine and should clear up quickly when you continue to use your recommended products.

Reaction Breakouts don't clear up if you continue to use your products. Often there is mild heat in the area of the breakout, and it continues to worsen. If you suspect this is what is happening, discontinue use and talk to your skincare provider for recommendations that are better suited for your skin.
