Q: Which makeup products are best to use on mature skin?

Many of us struggle with change, especially when it comes to our ‘look’. So often I hear, “I’ve worn my eyeliner like this since high school” or “I don’t think I’ve ever worn another lipstick”.  When I hear these things I sometimes think to myself, “change is scary but makeup is washable. If you hate it, wash it off “.

Skin changes with age.  These changes can bring new textures and shape to our skin as well as new shadows to deal with; it only stands to reason that the way you do your makeup may also need to change. Mature skin needs more moisture and light refracting particles to increase the appearance of youthful luminosity. This can be accomplished by using lightweight foundations or BB Creams as they reflect light best. Peach-toned concealers and cream blush on the apples of the cheeks will help counteract sallowness.  However, it’s best to use makeup that will help brighten the delicate area around the eyes rather than to completely conceal the skin which can cause products to settle into fine lines and wrinkles.  To avoid that aged matte look it is wise to allow your cream makeup to self-set.

Eyeshadows should not be completely matte nor full sparkle as these tend to enhance the look of thin skin.  Instead, opt for powder shadows with a slight sheen or self-setting cream eyeshadows.  Cream eyeshadows melt beautifully on to the eyelid without creasing. Slightly darken eyebrows to give a little definition and add shape to the face. Black-brown mascara will widen the eyes. Finish your look with a soft satin lipstick in a rose or peach color.
