Fall Skincare

I truly love Fall, but this year I’m really not ready for summer to be over.  With the change of seasons, we all know we have to change our wardrobe, but we never think to change our skincare. Updating your skincare in the fall is crucial to keep your skin looking it’s best because it goes through some major physiological changes when the leaves start to turn red and yellow, and before we turn on our heaters.

Once the weather starts to get cooler we all naturally start to produce less oil, this is especially important to be aware of if your skin is dry, dehydrated or easily irritated (even if only in the dead of winter).  During the summer we want our skincare to be light-weight lotions as not to clog these active pores, but in fall and winter, we need to move more toward creams that are packed with anti-dehydration ingredients like ceramides and niacinamide.

Ways to begin transitioning your routine
  • Start using a milk based cleanser for one of your daily washes.  Unless your skin is acne prone, you don’t need to use stronger gel based cleansers at both washes, a milk based cleanser cleans skin just as well as foaming but it helps your skin retain more water in its upper layers.
  • Invest in a nutrient-rich moisturizernight cream, or face oil that you can boost your skin’s moisture reservoir.  Keeping your skin hydrated is the best way to avoid dryness, flakiness, and redness.  It is also responsible for that beautiful glow we all want (MONEY SAVING TIP: No need to fake a glow with highlighters at the makeup counter if your skin is hydrated).
  • Add ceramides or products with vitamin E to your daytime routine, both stop your skin from becoming dehydrated and can create a beautiful smooth canvas for makeup application.
  • Don’t stop using SPF, at least an SPF 15, and consider using a BB Cream to give yourself sun protection and a bit of makeup coverage over that matte foundation you loved back in July.
  • Switch to hydrating masks and reduce how often you choose to use masks containing clay and sulfur.
  • Body lotions. Apply a hydrating body lotion immediately after every shower to keep your skin hydrated, early fall you might even get away with some of the newer ‘spray and go’ formulas.  Once winter comes, I like to use the spray ones like a serum under a thicker cream.  Also, if you have sensitive skin, avoid fragrances as they can be triggers for irritation and even eczema for those that are prone to it.
  • Lip Balm: I recommend having a few, keep one at your desk, in your purse or jacket, and one by your sink.  Remember, it doesn’t protect you if you don’t actually put it on.
  • Don’t forget your hands and feet!  Use a hand cream and foot balm nightly before bed to keep this used and abused skin from feeling chapped and cracked.  Your nails will appreciate the love too.
