How to Wash Your Face

When your mom talked to you about how to wash your face she probably said use Pond’s Cold cream which came out in 1948.  Luckily cleansers have dramatically improved since then with lighter formulations and more modern ingredients, but still, I cringe when I hear some of my new clients cleansing habits.

I get everything from ‘I don’t wash my face,’ to “I use the soap dispenser at the gym and the gym towel to exfoliate every day.’  WOW!!! I will admit, I’m not perfect either, but let’s vow to be better together and keep each other on track.  Here is the correct way to cleanse your face:

Choose your cleanser. Facial wipes do not cut it, but if you want to use them as a makeup remover before you cleanse just make sure you are using a good quality brand. Some cleansers are better for removing makeup, some are better for addressing specific skin conditions. I’m happy to help you with this but here are the basics:

  • Oily: a mild cleanser that lightly foams to help break down excess oil and debris
  • Dry: a milk cleanser that will gently float away impurities but doesn’t strip the skin.
  • Sensitive: use a milk cleanser and REALLY watch how warm your water is.  Too hot will damage your ability to retain moisture in the skin.

***ALSO, PLEASE no body wash on the face! They are full of all kinds of perfumes and bleck, just trust me, you are better off using your face wash on your body.***

Massage 2-3 pumps into your face for 60 seconds (or sing Happy Birthday 2x).  This will get the dirt and debris off of your skin.

  • Wear a full face of makeup? Then you are going to want to wash twice, the first being a quick 30 seconds cleanse just to get the makeup off, rinse and move on to your 1 minute cleanse.

Sonic brushes are not necessary to get your skin clean, but if you like your toys, only use your brush 2-3x a week. Tip: if you are breaking out, skip your sonic brush all together, and ALWAYS use the delicate brush, otherwise you risk over exfoliation.

Rinse well with warm water and pat dry with a clean towel.

Spray your mist, serum, eye cream and moisturize.

That’s all you need!   We are all exhausted at the end of the day, and it’s easy to slack off and skip the before bed stuff.  Studies show that women that sleep in their makeup look an average of 6 years older!!!! So it’s important to make sure you do this step every day.

Katt’s Tip: I get home from work, change clothes and wash my face right away. Yep, even before dinner, my guy can better handle me makeup-less at dinner than he can with my mascara smeared all over myself before his first cup of coffee.  I’ll bet yours can handle it better too 🙂
